Youth pleads not guilty over fatal cyclist accident

KUCHING: A teenager pleaded not guilty to a charge of dangerous driving causing the death of a cyclist.

The accused Elijah Jeremiah Yeo Shi Xian, 19, made the plea before Magistrate Nursyaheeqa Nazwa Radzali yesterday.

According to the charge, he was accused of driving dangerously and colliding with a cyclist, causing his death, at Jalan Stutong here at 5.30am on May 1, Bernama reported.

The charge was framed under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which carries a jail term of not less than five years and not more than 10 years, as well as a maximum fine of RM50,000.

In addition, a conviction would also lead to disqualification from holding a driving licence for a period of not less than five years and cancellation of the licence if holding a probationary licence.

The court allowed the accused to be released on RM20,000 bail with two sureties and set June 5 for case management.

The prosecution was conducted by deputy public prosecutor Mohd Fillanny Siji, while the accused was represented by lawyer Daniel Ling.

According to earlier reports, the victim, aged 56, sustained severe head injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
