Court hears man beat pregnant wife with plastic chair, rubber hose and clothes hanger

SUNGAI PETANI: A man was charged in the Sessions Court here on Thursday with causing injuries to his wife using various objects in March and last month.

However, the accused, Rosmaini Abdul Raof, 43, pleaded not guilty after the two charges were read out before Judge Najwa Che Mat.

On the first charge, the man is accused of intentionally causing grievous hurt to his wife, Nurfitri Moktar, 39, using a plastic chair and a rubber hose at a house in Bandar Amanjaya at about 5pm on March 29.

On the second charge, he is accused of again assaulting the victim using a clothes hanger and an iron hanger at the same location at about 9am on April 23.

Sinar Harian reported that the accused was charged under Section 326 of the Penal Code, which provides for a maximum jail term of 20 years and may also be liable to a fine or whipping, upon conviction.

The prosecution was handled by Kedah State Prosecution Director Datuk Khairul Anuar Abdul Halim, while the accused was represented by National Legal Aid Foundation (YBGK) lawyer Ruzanna Abdul Rahim.

In the same proceedings, the prosecution said the accused could not be granted bail as he is currently serving a prison sentence at Kajang Prison.

However, the defence asked the court to consider bail on the grounds that the accused has two wives and supports 11 children, including seven who are still in school.

The court ruled that the accused was not allowed bail and set June 16 for a further mention for submission of documents.

Previously, the media reported that the victim suffered serious injuries on several parts of her body after she was allegedly assaulted by her husband in an incident here.

As a result of the alleged assault, the 39-year-old victim, a civil servant, suffered a miscarriage when she was 12 weeks pregnant.

The suspect, who fled, was later arrested by police around Alor Setar.

Police also confirmed the accused is the same individual who was previously convicted of assaulting his wife in a case in Johor Bahru in 2021.
