MIRI: Construction work on SMK Tudan is now more than 90% complete and is expected to be finished by June, says Deputy Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Chiew Choon Man.
Chiew, the Miri MP, visited the site on Tuesday (May 5) to check on the progress of the long-delayed project.
"The construction includes 36 classrooms, new laboratories and workshops, a canteen, a multipurpose hall, a surau and other facilities.
"I have been monitoring and following up on the progress to ensure it is completed as soon as possible," he said in a statement.
He added that only minor works remain.
The project faced significant delays over the years and was classified as a sick project in 2022.
Chiew said he had consistently raised the issue in Parliament and brought it to the attention of Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek to seek help in expediting its completion.
Upon completion, he noted, the new school facilities would help ease overcrowding in nearby schools while providing a conducive learning environment.
"Equipping students with quality education is one of the most important tools for their future success and their contribution to the nation," he said.
He also expressed appreciation to the Education Ministry, particularly the Miri district Education office and the Miri Public Works Department for their continued efforts in ensuring the project’s completion.
Chiew added that he would continue to work closely with the relevant agencies to see the project through to completion.
