Chegubard issues apology to settle defamation suit by Nik Nazmi

KUALA LUMPUR: The defamation lawsuit filed by former minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad against political activist Badrul Hisham Shaharin has been settled through an open apology at the High Court here.

A consent judgment was recorded before Justice Gan Techiong on Monday (May 4).

In his apology, Badrul Hisham – better known as Chegubard – admitted that his allegations against Nik Nazmi were false and baseless.

"I retract all my allegations against YB Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad. I sincerely apologise... for the humiliation, distress and inconvenience caused.

"I hereby give an undertaking not to repeat or publish any statements on the same matter or to the same effect," Badrul Hisham said.

He also said he would take down his statements relating to the matter from social media.

Earlier, Nik Nazmi's lawyer Razlan Hadri Zulkifli informed the court that parties had agreed to settle out of court, which was confirmed by Badrul Hisham's lawyer Zolazrai Zolkapli.

When met by the press, Nik Nazmi said he accepted the defendant's apology as he did not want to prolong the matter.

On Jan 15, 2024, Nik Nazmi filed the legal action against Badrul Hisham.

He claimed that Badrul Hisham had uploaded defamatory statements relating to allegations of corruption involving him and a flood mitigation project on the Facebook account "Che GuBard" on Dec 20 and 29, 2023.

Nik Nazmi was previously natural resources, environment and climate change minister and subsequently natural resources and environmental sustainability minister until he resigned from the Cabinet in July last year.
