800kg croc shot dead after attack on villager

No longer a menace: Armed Wildlife Department rangers posing with the croc in Kunak, Sabah.

KOTA KINABALU: An 800kg saltwater crocodile, which attacked a villager, has been shot dead by Wildlife Department rangers.

The male reptile was detected in Sungai Ladang, Sri Kunak, in Sabah’s east coast Kunak district on Monday.

This was about a week after it attacked the villager.

The man, who was collecting shellfish near the river at about 2pm on April 19, suffered serious injuries to his leg.

Following the attack, the Wildlife Department set up traps to capture the reptile after it was alerted about the case.

The decision to shoot the reptile, which was about 5.3m in length, was to prevent further attacks on residents living along the river, said officials.
