30 houses razed in Sandakan blaze

SANDAKAN: About 30 houses were destroyed in a fire at Jalan Bokara, Kampung Karamunting, near here, early Wednesday morning (April 29).

Sandakan Fire and Rescue Station chief Jimmy Lagung said the department was alerted to the fire at 3.16am, prompting 21 firefighters to rush to the scene.

"The fire brigade worked to extinguish the blaze using three water jets sourced from the fire engine tank and nearby hydrants," he said in a statement on Wednesday.

Jimmy said the fire was estimated to have affected an area of 1.4 hectares, and firefighters managed to bring it under control at 4.29am, thereby saving another 100 houses in the village.

He said the operation was concluded at 7.01am after ensuring there were no further hazards at the scene.

No fatalities were reported, and the cause of the incident is still under investigation, he said. – Bernama
