Negri Sembilan BN calls for special assembly sitting amid political crisis

SEREMBAN: Negri Sembilan Barisan Nasional wants a special sitting of the state legislative assembly to be held immediately to resolve the political crisis in the state, says Datuk Seri Jalaluddin Alias (pic).

The state Umno chief said this was necessary to gauge support for Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun.

"The Speaker should do this quickly to resolve the issue in the best possible way," he said when met at Wisma Umno near here on Tuesday (April 28).

Barisan withdrew support for the unity government in the state on Monday (April 27) when 14 of its assemblymen declared a loss of confidence in Aminuddin's leadership and government.

Prior to that, the Pakatan Harapan-Barisan unity government held 31 of the 36 state seats, with Perikatan Nasional holding the remaining five.

Following Barisan's withdrawal, the five Perikatan assemblymen indicated their willingness to work with the party.

With this, Barisan said it had secured a simple majority to form the state government.

However, Aminuddin had earlier said he had received the consent of the Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Negri Sembilan, Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir, to continue carrying out his duties despite losing the support of the 14 assemblymen.

Aminuddin said the state ruler had advised him and decreed that he continue his responsibilities as Mentri Besar until there was further clarity on the issue.

Jalaluddin said that if a special session was not held immediately, it would cause further instability in the state.

Jalaluddin said the state Barisan was also considering other options to resolve the political impasse.

When asked whether he had sought an audience with the state ruler, Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir, since Barisan claims to have the simple majority to form the government, Jalaluddin said an application was submitted on Monday.

Earlier, Jalaluddin said he had directed all former Barisan exco members to vacate their offices and return any privileges they received from the state government, including their official vehicles.

"I had also told the Deputy Speaker to do the same.

"We have to do so as we are no longer in the government," he said.
