Ipoh police launch probe into viral video of cop allegedly taking money from man

IPOH: Police have launched an internal investigation following a viral video on Facebook that allegedly shows a police officer taking money from a man.

Ipoh OCPD Asst Comm Muhammad Najib Hamzah said the clip, uploaded by an account known as “Update & Info”, has been brought to the attention of the police.

In a statement on Sunday (April 26), ACP Najib said preliminary checks found that the multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) seen in the video carried the callsign “PK 56”, which is linked to Perak police under Ipoh police headquarters' administration.

“However, the exact location of the incident and the identity of the officer involved are still being verified,” he said.

He added that police have since opened an internal probe to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident, including where it took place and who was involved.

He stressed that the matter is viewed seriously and that the police would not compromise on any misconduct that could undermine the integrity of the force.

“Investigations would be conducted in a transparent, thorough and fair manner, and that firm action will be taken if any breach of the law or regulations is established.

“Members of the public with information on the incident are urged to contact IPD Ipoh at 05-2451500, or visit the nearest police station to assist in the investigation,” he added.

He also advised against making any speculation that could interfere with the probe, and that cooperation from the public is crucial in ensuring a thorough investigation.
