Japanese fugitive wanted for 2018 murder deported from Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR: The police have deported a Japanese fugitive wanted in connection with a murder case in his home country dating back to 2018.

Criminal Investigation Department (CID) director Comm Datuk M. Kumar said the operation was carried out by the Interpol unit following a request from Japanese authorities.

The man was initially arrested by the Narcotics Crime Investigation Department (NCID) in Kedah for offences under the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and the Immigration Act 1959/63.

Investigations uncovered that the suspect had altered his identity and nationality, posing as a Myanmar citizen to evade detection.

The suspect's true were identified through fingerprint comparison and facial recognition technology.

"DNA profiling conducted by the forensic databank division at Bukit Aman also returned a positive match with records provided by Japanese authorities," Kumar said.

The suspect was charged at the Alor Setar court on Aug 27, 2023, where he received multiple prison sentences for drug-related and immigration offences.

The successful deportation underscores a continued commitment to combating transnational crime while strengthening international security cooperation.

"Malaysia will not become a safe haven for individuals attempting to escape justice," he added.
