Supervisor remanded for allegedly taking bribes to approve overtime

MELAKA: A former factory supervisor has been remanded for six days to assist in investigations into allegedly receiving about RM25,000 in bribes in exchange for approving overtime work for 31 employees under his supervision over the past two years.

Magistrate N. Sivashangari issued the remand order against the suspect, a man in his 40s, until next Wednesday (April 29), following an application by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) here on Friday.

According to a MACC source, the suspect was arrested at about 12.20pm on Thursday when he turned up to give his statement at the MACC office in Alai.

“Preliminary investigations found that the suspect is believed to have solicited and received bribes from 31 employees, most of whom are foreign workers, as an inducement to support and approve their overtime applications.

“The alleged offences are believed to have been committed between 2024 and 2025, with payments ranging from RM25 to RM200 made monthly,” the source said.

The source added that the suspect is also believed to have threatened workers by refusing to support their overtime requests if payments were not made.

Meanwhile, Melaka MACC director Datuk Adi Supian Shafie confirmed the arrest when contacted.

He said the case is being investigated under Section 16(a)(A) of the MACC Act 2009.
