RM15mil Ipoh Old Town carpark project not scrapped, says Nga

IPOH: The RM15mil multi-storey parking and commercial complex project at Jalan Panglima in Ipoh Old Town, which was slated to begin development in May last year, will still be built, says Nga Kor Ming.

However, the Housing and Local Government Minister said there were still issues related to land and concessionary terms to be ironed out before the project could move forward.

"The project, implemented under a private finance initiative, is ready to proceed but is awaiting the council to settle the outstanding issues.

"I have instructed the Ipoh mayor (Zamakhshari Hanipah) to resolve the matters within this week or, if possible, by today so that works an begin immediately," he said in a press conference after presenting appointment letters to 160 Chinese New Village chiefs here on Friday (April 24).

The project was first announced in January 2023 to address the parking and traffic congestion in the area and boost the tourism hotspot in conjunction with Visit Malaysia 2026.

A groundbreaking ceremony was held in April 2025, with works scheduled to begin in May.

The proposed complex will be located at the existing parking area behind the Han Chin Pet Soo (Han Chin Villa) building, with a capacity of about 350 cars.
