JKM denies role in child placement claim

PETALING JAYA: The Social Welfare Department has denied claims circulating on social media that it sought help from an individual to place a child in its care, calling the allegation inaccurate and misleading.

In a statement on Wednesday (April 22), the department clarified that there was no official placement of the child with the individual in 2020, as alleged.

It said the child’s care arrangement was a private one between the biological mother and the individual, without the department’s involvement.

The department further clarified that it received a referral only on April 29, 2022, for advisory services related to the child’s care status and documentation.

Following that, investigations and a comprehensive assessment were carried out in line with the child’s best interests and the provisions of the Child Act 2001.

It added that on Aug 3, 2022, the Court for Children issued an order concerning the individual until the child reaches the age of 18, after taking into account a statutory declaration from the biological mother consenting to the arrangement.

The department stressed that all cases are handled in accordance with the law to safeguard children’s welfare.

“The department ensures that every case referred is handled in accordance with the relevant legal provisions to safeguard the welfare of the child. In this regard, JKM advises all parties not to engage in speculation or make statements that could cause misunderstanding about its role and the well-being of the child involved,” the department said.

It added that the department remains committed to carrying out its responsibilities with integrity, professionalism and adherence to the rule of law.
