Cloud seeding planned in Kota Tinggi to ease Lok Heng water shortage

The low water level at Sg Ulu Sedili Kecil in Kota Tinggi, which is causing water disruptions in the area.

KOTA TINGGI: Cloud seeding is expected over the next two days in Kota Tinggi to raise water levels for the Lok Heng water treatment plant, says Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin.

Mohamed Khaled said the plant supplies treated water to about 4,000 people in Felda Lok Heng and Felda Waha, who have faced water cuts during the current dry season.

He said the dry spell had caused water levels in Sungai Ulu Sedili to drop sharply, reducing the plant's water supply.

"To date, many mitigation efforts have been done by the state government with the relevant agencies, including trying to source groundwater using tube wells and also carrying out water transfer from Sg Kulah,” said Mohamed Khaled on Wednesday (April 22).

He said those measures could not continue because of the limited water supply and high salinity in Sungai Lukah, which the existing facilities at Lok Heng could not treat.

Mohamed Khaled said Ranhill-SAJ would transfer and install a desalination plant from Forest City to Lok Heng as an immediate measure.

He said the plant would be able to produce about two million litres of treated water a day.

In a Facebook post, he said there had been delays in implementing the project.

He said cloud seeding was scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday.

"These two days were picked as in the past, the clouds were not suitable for cloud seeding to be done," said Mohamad Khaled
