Sabah Electricity meets rising demand

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Electricity said it is meeting higher power demand in Sabah during the current hot period and past festive seasons.

Sabah Electricity chief executive officer Mohd Yaakob Mohd Jaafar said the power supply system remained stable with a 21% reserve margin. He said the utility recorded its highest maximum demand on Monday at 1,232MW.

“The company had about 1,500MW of generation capacity and was ready to meet further demand if the hot and dry weather continued,” he said.

Mohd Yaakob said this after launching Sabah Electricity’s mobile application, "MySE+ App", in Kota Kinabalu on Tuesday, April 21.

He said the company had been optimising fuel supply distribution between Sabah’s east and west coasts because the east coast relied on diesel-powered generators. He said Sabah Electricity had increased power transfers from the west coast to the east coast to 330MW from about 220MW to 300MW.

Mohd Yaakob said Sabah Electricity had raised its tariff since Feb 1 and that monthly bills should increase by about 15% to 20%.

He said the new mobile application was intended to improve customer service through digital access.
