Man jailed for molesting minor in hospital

SEREMBAN: A 60-year-old dialysis patient has been sentenced to three years’ jail by the Sessions Court here for sexually assaulting a 15-year-old female patient at a government hospital.

Zulkefli Abdul Rani had pleaded guilty when he was charged on April 16.

Judge Surita Budin, when meting out the sentence during proceedings yesterday, said the court also took into account that the accused had to undergo dialysis treatment.

“The court, taking into account that the accused also suffered from a broken leg apart from having to undergo dialysis treatment, hereby orders him to serve three years in jail,” she said.

Zulkefli, who was brought to court in a wheelchair, was charged with committing the offence at about 4pm on Jan 30 at the green zone of Tuanku Ampuan Najihah Hospital in Kuala Pilah.

He was charged under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017, which carries a jail term of up to 20 years and whipping, upon conviction.

Section 14(a) of the Act deals with molestation.

Earlier, deputy public prosecutor Nurul Balkis Zunaidi said the accused was taken to prison after he failed to raise the RM5,500 bail on April 16.
