PUTRAJAYA: Four series of cloud-seeding operations (OPA) focusing on Melaka and Johor will be carried out starting Monday (Apr 20) until Thursday (Apr 23).
The National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma) is coordinating the exercise following hot and dry weather that has affected water supply, agriculture and safety in both states.
Nadma said in a statement that the OPA focuses on eight dams and two water treatment plants (WTP) to ensure the continuity of water supply.
In Melaka, the focus includes the Durian Tunggal Dam, Jus Dam and Asahan Dam.
In Johor, the operation involves the Upper Layang Dam, Machap Dam, Seluyut Dam, Lebam Dam, Linggiu Dam, Lokheng WTP and Gembut WTP.
Nadma said the operation is necessary as water storage levels in these areas remain at a cautious level.
The agency received technical advice from the Malaysian Meteorological Department regarding atmospheric conditions before starting the OPA.
Assessments are vital to ensure the effectiveness of spraying sodium chloride solutions into clouds to stimulate rain.
Nadma added that the intervention is a proactive step to prevent a water supply crisis from reaching a critical level by early May.
A C130 Hercules aircraft belonging to the air force will be used throughout the operation. - Bernama
