22 foreigners held in Johor immigration operation

JOHOR BARU: A total of 22 foreigners from three countries were arrested for various immigration offences following an operation here.

Johor Immigration director Datuk Mohd Rusdi Mohd Darus said they were detained during an operation carried out at about 10pm on Friday (April 17).

“Following a tip-off and information gathered through intelligence, an operation involving business and residential premises was launched.

“The operation focused on businesses, such as restaurants selling tomyam, believed to be employing or serving as gathering places for undocumented immigrants.

“Further checks led to the arrest of 22 foreigners believed to have committed immigration offences,” he said in a statement here.

He said those detained were from Thailand, Indonesia and Myanmar, and were aged between 18 and 52.

Mohd Rusdi said the detainees were believed to be workers, customers, and occupants of the premises that were inspected.

He added that all detainees have been placed at the Setia Tropika Immigration Depot for further investigation, and that investigations are being conducted under the Immigration Act 1959/63 and the Immigration Regulations 1963.

Mohd Rusdi also said that four Form 29 notices, which are summonses issued to witnesses, were served during the operation to assist in investigations.
