MACC chief: Media a strategic partner in fostering culture of integrity

KUALA LUMPUR: The media serves as a strategic partner to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) in educating the public and fostering a culture of integrity, says Tan Sri Azam Baki.

“The role of the media is not only to report, but also to educate society on the dangers and impact of corruption,” added the MACC chief commissioner.

He noted that balanced reporting helps prevent misinformation while ensuring that enforcement efforts are understood by the public.

Responsible journalism is a key pillar in the fight against corruption, said Azam, adding that ethical and accurate reporting was crucial to ensure that corruption-related information is conveyed without compromising investigations or public trust.

“Every piece of information reported must be verified and not sensationalised, as it can affect ongoing investigations and public perception,” he said in his speech at the MACC Media Awards 2025 at a hotel here yesterday.

Azam also stressed that the fight against corruption requires a collective effort involving all segments of society.

“Eradicating corruption is not solely the responsibility of enforcement agencies, but a shared duty that requires commitment from every individual and organisation,” he said.

He said initiatives such as the MACC Media Awards aim to recognise the contributions of journalists who uphold integrity in their reporting.

“These awards are a form of appreciation for media practitioners who have demonstrated excellence in reporting on corruption issues,” he said.

At the event, awards were presented to media reporters for excellence in reporting on corruption issues, while all media organisations in attendance also received appreciation plaques in recognition of their contributions.

Among the recipients was Star Media Group chief content officer Datin Paduka Esther Ng.

Azam added that such recognition also encourages more in-depth and responsible journalism in addressing governance and integrity matters.

He reaffirmed the MACC’s commitment to strengthening collaboration with the media to ensure transparency and accountability.

“We will continue to engage with media organisations to enhance understanding and cooperation in delivering accurate information to the public.”

Azam said the commission will also intensify its efforts in promoting integrity and good governance through various outreach programmes.

“Public awareness is essential in preventing corruption, and the media remains one of the most effective channels to reach the rakyat,” he said.

He expressed hope that stronger cooperation between the MACC and the media would help build a corruption-free society.

“Together, we can create an environment where integrity is upheld and corruption is rejected,” he said.
