PETALING JAYA: Two new professional diploma programmes in artificial intelligence (AI) and cybersecurity will soon be offered to local journalists to strengthen their skills in an increasingly digital media landscape.

Introduced by the Malaysia Productivity Corporation (MPC) and Malaysian Press Institute (MPI), the Professional Diploma in AI Journalism and Professional Diploma in Cybersecurity Journalism will be rolled out under the Akademi Dalam Industri (ADI) framework.

The programmes aim to strengthen media practitioners’ capabilities amid rapid advances in AI and rising digital security threats.

ADI is a strategic government initiative led by MPC to develop local talent and bridge the gap between educational institutions and industry needs.

“We want to upskill our journalists to ensure they are well-versed in these fields. The curriculum focuses on data analysis, ethics and more,” said MPI chief executive officer Ainol Amriz Ismail.

At the announcement yesterday, he highlighted the media’s role in nation building and fostering public understanding.

“The media is the bridge between policies and the rakyat. We need journalism that is not only swift but accurate and builds understanding,” he said.

MPC deputy director-general Dr Mohamad Norjayadi Tamam said the initiative aims to keep journalists competitive by equipping them with relevant skills amid rapid industry changes.

“A skilled workforce not only benefits individuals but also contributes to organisational productivity,” he said.

Both the programmes are internationally recognised diplomas accredited by the London Examination Board.

The modules will be developed in collaboration with UTMSPACE Services Sdn Bhd as the strategic academic partner.

The three-month online programmes offer a flexible format for media practitioners aged 18 to 40 who are currently employed in the industry.

The first intake is expected to open in the coming months, with participation limited to 20 people per programme.

Also at the event, MPC and MPI announced the introduction of media awards under the ADI programme.

“These awards aim to recognise the media’s role in raising public awareness of ADI, focusing on topics related to productivity, innovation and talent development,” said Mohamad Norjayadi.

There will be three categories: Print Media and News Portal, Social Media (Short Video) as well as Television, Radio and Portal (Video).

Winners will be selected based on reporting quality related to ADI programmes, with emphasis on factual accuracy, demonstrated industry impact and coverage of skills development driving economic growth.

The winner in each category will receive RM10,000, while first and second runners-up will receive RM7,000 and RM5,000 respectively. There will also be four consolation prizes of RM1,000.

Submissions opened yesterday and will close on Aug 2 this year.
