Malaysia on track for 'AI nation' status by 2030 despite Middle East conflict, says Gobind

ISKANDAR PUTERI: Malaysia’s goal of becoming an Artificial Intelligence (AI) nation by 2030 remains on track despite the ongoing Middle East conflict, says Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo.

He said the ministry will continue to monitor the situation to ensure the vision is achieved within the government's set timeline.

“We are still on track at the moment, but we are making the necessary preparations to ensure our vision to be an AI nation by 2030 where 30% of the country’s GDP comes from the digital sector is realised. We will take the necessary steps if there are any impacts that could affect that vision,” he said.

Gobind noted that as of last year, the digital sector's contribution to the national GDP reached 25.5%.

He spoke to reporters after officiating the Southern Region Digital Economy office at Menara Iskandar Investment Bhd (IIB) on Thursday (April 16).

The minister added that the ministry is studying the potential impact of the conflict on other areas of the country's digital sector.

“All sectors will be affected. To what extent it will impact the digital economy is something we need to study, and we are currently in the process of doing so,” he said.
