Affordable education in Europe gaining ground

KUALA LUMPUR: It is safe and affordable for Malaysian students to study in Europe, says academics from the region.

This is despite the conflict that is affecting the region.

Higher School of Economics University Saint Petersburg, Russia, director of representative offices department Svyatoslav Kvartalnov said they are quite careful and strict about the security of their students.

“We have really strict processes to ensure their safety,” he said during the Star Education Fair 2026 in Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre yesterday.

“Russia is also a very well developed and advanced country,” he said.

He added that a lot of well known web platforms and Internet banking are easily accessible.

The country is also quite multicultural and at the same time, Muslim friendly with some Malaysians studying there, he said.

“Every parent will of course ask if the country is safe before sending their child there,” he added.

John von Neumann University, Hungary, director of academic affairs Laszlo Toth said the cost of living in Hungary is affordable compared to other popular study destinations in Europe.

“It is much cheaper and one of the safest countries in the European Union,” he said, adding that the average cost of living per month for a student could be around €500 (RM2,320).

He also said many of their courses are 60% practical based.

“So students will have real-life learning and experience for their chosen course,” he said.

Other European universities at the fair are Kazan Federal University and Vitus Bering Kamchatka State University – both Russia – and Baden-Wurttemberg International, Germany.

Also at the fair is the Taipei-Education, Economic And Cultural Office In Malaysia.
