Woman fined RM2,000 for having smut on her phone

BACHOK: A woman has been fined RM2,000 by the Magistrate's Court here after pleading guilty to a charge of having pornographic material, including videos, on her mobile phone.

The 32-year-old accused entered the plea after the charge against her was read out before Magistrate Fakhrul Razzi Abd Hamid on Thursday (April 9).

She was charged with possessing a mobile phone containing several pornographic video recordings at a house in Kampung Kubang Telaga here at about 8pm on Monday (April 6).

The charge was brought under Section 292 of the Penal Code for possession of obscene materials, which provides for a jail sentence of up to three years or a fine or both if convicted.

National Legal Aid Foundation lawyer Norizaidah Abdul Salam, representing the accused, urged the court to only impose a fine as her client is a single mother who earns RM35 a day as a canteen assistant.

"The accused has a 15-year-old daughter and promises not to repeat the offence to set a good example for her child,” she said.

DPP Muhammad Aiman Syahmi requested a proportionate sentence as a lesson to the accused and the community.

The court then imposed a fine of RM2,000 in default six months' jail.
