PETALING JAYA: Umno leaders past and present paid tribute to Tun Dr Ling Liong Sik, remembering him as a loyal friend devoted to the nation and Barisan Nasional.
They described him as a statesman who helped provide political stability to the coalition and the country when Umno was declared illegal in 1988.
Barisan chairman and Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi (pic) said Dr Ling’s death was a profound loss to the nation.
He said Dr Ling was a statesman who leaves behind a lasting legacy in public service.

“He will be remembered as a figure who served with full dedication, especially in developing the national transport sector and strengthening educational institutions that continue to benefit today’s generation.
“Throughout his leadership, he demonstrated deep commitment and a strong devotion to both the nation and the party, particularly during his time in Barisan Nasional.
“His services and contributions will remain etched in history and remembered by all Malaysians.
“To his family, I pray they are given strength and resilience in this difficult time,” he said.

Former Umno president Datuk Seri Najib Razak, in a message on his Facebook page, also extended his condolences, describing Dr Ling as a key figure in Malaysian politics.
“My condolences to the family of Tun Ling Liong Sik. May they remain strong in facing this trial,” he said.
Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Johari Ghani recalled Dr Ling’s role during a turbulent period in Malaysian politics, particularly when the party was declared illegal in 1988.
“Dr Ling was an MCA leader who helped provide political stability during Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s premiership.
“He made that stability possible – both politically and in terms of economic development,” said Johari.
Johari said Dr Ling stepped up as Barisan chairman during the crisis, reflecting his understanding of the country’s political dynamics.
“When Umno was declared illegal, Dr Ling stepped up as the Barisan chairman.
“That showed his sincerity, honesty and deep understanding of the political landscape at the time.
“His leadership is something that me and future generations, will truly admire,” he added.
Former Wanita Umno chief Tan Sri Rafidah Aziz described Dr Ling as more than a politician.
“We had a leader in him, not a ‘politician’ per se. My deepest condolences to the family on their bereavement. May his soul rest in peace,” she said.
Rafidah also spoke of their personal friendship, recalling his warmth and professionalism.
“He was a very good friend who simply called me ‘Raf’.
“We discussed many issues and laughed a lot too.
“He was professional in his approach, gentle but precise, and like me, would voice his opinions on issues,” she added.
Leaders from other Barisan component parties also paid tribute to Dr Ling.
MIC president Tan Sri SA Vigneswaran described him as a principled statesman whose contributions to Malaysia were significant.
PBRS president Datuk Seri Arthur Joseph Kurup also honoured Dr Ling’s contributions to community development and extended his heartfelt condolences to the family.
Meanwhile, Opposition leader Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin said the country had lost a figure whose contributions to economic progress and political stability were significant.
“His extensive experience in government, especially during his 17 years leading the Transport Ministry, reflected a high level of commitment to national development,” he said.
Hamzah added that Dr Ling’s legacy should serve as a guide for current and future leaders.
