Jobless man charged with attempted murder of wife in Perak Tengah

IPOH: An unemployed man has been charged in the Sessions Court here with attempting to murder his wife at their home in Perak Tengah.

Mohd Yusof Mat Yatim, 42, pleaded not guilty after the charge, framed under Section 307 of the Penal Code, was read before Judge Meor Sulaiman Ahmad Tarmizi on Wednesday (April 1).

He is accused of covering the face of his 38-year-old wife, Nur Syazwana Mohd Talaha, with a pillow, knowing that the act could cause death, at a house in Taman Changkat Lada Raya, Seberang Perak, on March 25 at about 9am.

If found guilty, he faces imprisonment of up to 10 years and a fine, or up to 20 years’ jail if the victim was injured.

During the proceedings, police prosecuting officer Insp Zahira Musa applied for the accused to be denied bail.

“According to the investigating officer, the accused acted aggressively during the investigation.

“He also attempted to jump from the fourth floor,” she told the court.

Judge Meor Sulaiman fixed May 4 for mention and to allow Mohd Yusof time to secure legal representation.
