Ex-inmate determined to rebuild life after release

A FORMER prisoner from Klang is determined to turn over a new leaf this Hari Raya Aidilfitri after being given what he calls a second chance, reported Kosmo!

The man, identified as Zack, 51, was recently released after serving six months for drug-related offences. He hopes to return home to his family with a renewed effort to be a good man.

“I was ‘lost’ once, but I was given a second chance. Now I just want to celebrate Hari Raya with my wife and children,” he said.

He admitted that before his arrest, he spent most of his income on drugs, neglecting his responsibilities as a husband and father.

“I didn’t think about my family. All I wanted was to feed my addiction,” he said.

After his release in January, Zack faced repeated rejections while searching for work, before finally being given an opportunity through the Prisons Department and a job placement company.

> A man from Nilai, Negri Sembilan, turned his recycling habit into something life-changing, funding surgery for his left eye, reported Berita Harian.

Jaafar Idrus, 74, redeemed RM8,000 worth of reward points through the KitaRecycle programme under SWM Environment Sdn Bhd, using it to cover the cost of his cataract treatment.

“I only had to pay RM1,300 for the lens replacement using the recycling points. I didn’t have to touch my savings,” said the Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (Mardi) retiree.

Jaafar, who has been collecting recyclable items since 2021, said he began doing the recycling habit to stay active.

> Hari Raya Aidilfitri is a time of joy and togetherness, and for Mohd Razif Romle, 40, and his wife Nor Hazani Zakaria, 45, it is no different, according to Sinar Harian.

The couple with dwarfism from Sungai Petani, along with their 10-year-old daughter Awatif Jannah, made early preparations from buying new clothes to planning their balik kampung between Kedah and Terengganu.

But behind the familiar rituals are quiet adjustments.

“Every time we buy clothes, we cut and resew them to fit our sizes. I use my own sewing machine for it, because sending them to a tailor is expensive,” said Nor Hazani.

Despite the challenges, they remain focused on giving their daughter a good upbringing.
