Storm, 'catastrophic winds' ruin Bukit Rambai families' Raya preparations

MELAKA: The excitement of making final preparations for Hari Raya Aidilfitri turned into heartbreak for about 50 families in Bukit Rambai after strong winds damaged homes and destroyed festive decorations on Tuesday (March 17).

Klebang assemblyman Datuk Lim Ban Hong said the storm, which struck at about 6pm, affected several residential areas including Kampung Gedong Lalang, Seberang Gajah, Taman Bukit Rambai and Rumah Awam Fatimah here.

He said many of the affected houses suffered severe roof damage, with several homes also struck by falling trees after powerful winds swept through the neighbourhoods.

Lim added that some residents were preparing festive delicacies for the upcoming celebration when the storm struck, causing some of the food to be ruined.

"The disaster has greatly affected the residents, especially as they were making their final preparations ahead of Hari Raya Aidilfitri.

"I sympathise with the families affected, particularly as the incident occurred just a few days before the celebration," he said on Wednesday (March 18).

He said reports were also received of electricity supply disruptions and rainwater entering homes, damaging rooms, furniture and appliances.

"For some residents, this was the first time they experienced such catastrophic winds," he added.

Lim said several agencies mobilised immediately to assist victims and carry out clean-up and recovery efforts.

They included the Tangga Batu fire station, the Melaka Historic City Council (MBMB) and the Melaka Tengah District Office.

He said efforts are ongoing to assist the affected families and ensure their welfare is looked after.
