Sabah's rice supply stable, no need for panic buying, says minister


KOTA KINABALU: Sabah has enough rice supply to last until September, says state Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Industries minister Datuk Jamawi Jaafar.

He said that while some districts are facing supply shortfalls, Sabah Bernas has told him that these areas will be receiving fresh stocks soon.

As such, he urged the public to refrain from panic buying because the state government is constantly monitoring food supplies and taking proactive measures to ensure consistent stocks.

These measures include increasing local crop yields, identifying problems that affect yields, and opening up more land to plant padi, he said on Sunday (March 15).

These areas include abandoned fields in Kota Belud, Terusan Sapi, Telupid, Tambunan, Keningau and Tenom.

Jamawi said Sabah still depends on imported rice to meet demand but these efforts will help maintain a stable supply.
