‘Act swiftly against sacrilege’

PETALING JAYA: Swift action is needed by enforcement agencies against those involved in the desecration of religious symbols, says Gobind Singh Deo (pic).

The Digital Minister said this is necessary to maintain public order and prevent racial sentiments from rising.

He noted that law enforcement agencies such as the police should not compromise on their duty to safeguard peace and uphold the law.

“Of late, however, we have seen a lack of action against those spewing racial hatred, which has resulted in flare-ups that directly threaten the stability of our nation,” he said in a statement.

Gobind, who is Damansara MP, cited recent cases where swift action was taken against those involved in abuse of the Quran to address public concerns over the unacceptable acts.

“The quick action taken by the authorities to charge those responsible is commendable and sets the precedent that such behaviour will not be tolerated,” he said.

As such, Gobind said swift action should also be taken against any acts against the “Soolam”, a sacred religious Hindu symbol.

“I call upon the IGP to take immediate steps to identify and bring those responsible for the desecration of religious symbols to court,” he said.
