Lam Thye lauds govt’s move not to hold official Hari Raya open houses, cut overseas trips

KUALA LUMPUR: The government’s decision to forgo official Hari Raya open houses this year and reduce foreign trips by ministers and senior officials is welcomed, says Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye.

The social activist said the announcement by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim reflects a timely response to current global uncertainties, particularly the ongoing crisis in the Middle East, which continues to impact economic stability, energy prices and the overall cost of living.

“At a time when many Malaysians are tightening their belts, it is only appropriate that the government also demonstrates prudence and fiscal discipline in the management of public funds,” he said when contacted on Thursday (March 12).

Lee added that the decision sends a positive signal that the government is mindful of prioritising essential spending and ensuring that national resources are directed towards programmes that directly benefit the rakyat.

He also suggested additional cost-saving measures that could further reinforce the spirit of prudent spending within the government.

Among them, Lee proposed that if foreign travel by ministers and senior officials is necessary, they should opt for business class rather than first class.

He also recommended keeping official delegations small and focused to ensure overseas visits remain purposeful and cost-effective.

“In addition, greater use of virtual meetings and digital platforms should be encouraged where possible to reduce travel expenses,” he said.

Lee also urged ministries and government agencies to review other areas of discretionary spending to ensure public funds are utilised efficiently and responsibly.

He said such measures would help strengthen public confidence that the government is serious about financial discipline and committed to leading by example during challenging economic times.

“Prudent management of national resources today will help ensure that the country remains resilient and better prepared to face future uncertainties,” he added.
