Keep fire extinguishers within reach in cars, says Perak Bomba chief

IPOH: Motorists are advised to keep a small fire extinguisher in their vehicles in case a fire breaks out, says Perak Fire and Rescue Department director Datuk Sayani Saidon.

Sayani said that having a fire extinguisher in the vehicle could help ensure the safety of both drivers and passengers during emergencies.

“A 3kg fire extinguisher would be sufficient for vehicle emergencies. When such a situation occurs, you can quickly put out the fire or at least control it in the early stages.

“You can place it under the front passenger seat that is easy to reach if you become trapped. Do not place them in the boot or at the back of the car because it will be difficult to reach during an emergency,” she said when met during the bubur lambuk preparing session at the Perak Fire and Rescue Department Headquarters on Thursday (March 12).

"If there is an accident, you may also be able to help put out a fire in other vehicles,” she said.

She was responding to a question regarding the recent increase in vehicle fires in the state.

“I cannot deny that within a week, there were at least four or five cases.

"We are heading towards the festive season, so there will be more vehicles on the road,” she said.

Sayani noted that one of the main causes of vehicle fires is electrical wiring failure, where in many cases the original wiring system of the vehicle had been altered.

"Sometimes vehicle owners install additional wiring for stronger sound systems or extra lighting, and this can interfere with the original electrical wiring.

"There are instances where vehicles suddenly start emitting smoke even when they are stationary, such as when drivers stop at toll booths," she added.

However, she said that fire resulting from accidents may also occur due to fuel leaks or severe impact damage.

Sayani urged motorists to take preventive measures by ensuring their vehicles are properly maintained.

“Drivers should check their vehicles and ensure everything is in good condition, including the tyres and engine,” she said.

Seperately, Sayani said a warning letter will be issued to three volunteer fire brigade groups following the death of a 25-year-old volunteer fireman who fell into a lake during a training exercise at Bandar Baru Lahat Mines on March 8.

The three groups involved are from PBS Menglembu, PBS Pekan Baru and PBS Pasir Pinji.

She said the groups had earlier informed the department about the water training exercise, however, the incident occurred after the training session had ended.

“After the exercise ended, there was still fuel left in the boat, so they decided to use it up," she added.

Sayani said the department is currently considering appropriate action against the three volunteer firemen groups.

“There will be no penalty, but we will issue a warning to the teams. I am still considering what heavier mechanism can be imposed on the members,” she said.

Sayani also advised volunteer fire brigades to inform the department before conducting any training exercises, especially in high-risk areas such as water bodies.

“This is so that the Fire and Rescue Department can remain alert, conduct monitoring and remind them about the standard operating procedures,” she said.
