Aid delivered to flood-hit Tangkarason clinic in remote Paitan

Aid arrives for a remote Paitan clinic after floods destroyed medicines and disrupted treatment for rural patients.

PAITAN: Urgently needed medical supplies and food packs have been delivered to the flood-hit Tangkarason Health Clinic, a remote facility serving communities hours away from the nearest major towns.

The clinic was severely damaged during a major flood on Feb 19—described by villagers as the worst in decades—which destroyed medicines and equipment, disrupting treatment for patients with chronic conditions.

The assistance was delivered by Sabah Minister of Women, Health and People’s Wellbeing Datuk Julita Majungki during a working visit on Friday (March 6).

“The contributions presented today are meant to help address the clinic’s immediate needs while further assistance is being pursued,” she said.

Items were handed over to Beluran Area Health Officer Dr Nafsah Dulajis, with some supplies contributed through the Hospital Queen Elizabeth Welfare and Social Club.

Julita said the damage, estimated at more than RM1mil, highlighted the urgent need to strengthen rural healthcare facilities. Furniture, vaccines, and essential treatment tools were submerged and rendered unusable during the disaster.

“I have spoken with the Sabah State Health Department (JKNS) regarding the damage here, and the needs of this clinic will be brought forward,” she said.

She also commended the staff for their resilience, noting they continued serving the community even while the clinic was temporarily cut off by floodwaters.
