Cops intensify monitoring of foreign interests, religious sites amid West Asia tensions

KUALA LUMPUR: Police are intensifying monitoring of United States and European interests and assets in Malaysia, as well as houses of worship that could potentially be targeted by certain groups, amid tensions in West Asia.

Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail said all state police chiefs and department directors have been instructed to enhance patrols and deployments at such locations, including borders and other key sites, following the latest geopolitical developments involving Iran.

“For everyone’s information, there are about 2,500 Iranian nationals currently residing in our country and we are constantly monitoring them to ensure our security situation remains stable and under control,” he told a press conference at Bukit Aman on Friday (March 6).

Mohd Khalid added that the police are continuously holding meetings through the National Security Council to assess developments related to the situation.

He said the ongoing monitoring and security measures reflect the police’s commitment to maintaining public order and ensuring the country remains free from external threats.

Global tensions have escalated amid the worsening conflict involving the United States, Israel and Iran, with intensified military operations, widening diplomatic strains and growing humanitarian concerns in several regions.
