No price offences so far at Sarawak’s Ramadan bazaars

KUCHING: Sarawak has so far recorded zero cases of price hikes and related offences at Ramadan bazaars, says state Domestic Trade and Cost of Living director Matthew Dominic Barin.

He said the ministry had inspected 2,682 premises statewide under Ops Pantau as of Tuesday (March 3).

"Sarawak has maintained an excellent record of zero cases at Ramadan bazaars to date, compared with six cases in other states," he told reporters during a walkabout at the Stutong Ramadan bazaar here on Wednesday (March 4).

Matthew said 206 enforcement personnel and 89 price monitoring officers were deployed daily throughout Sarawak under Ops Pantau, which runs from Feb 19 to March 20.

He said the personnel were deployed in both uniform and plainclothes to monitor business premises and prevent offences.

Sarawak has 41 Ramadan bazaars this year, including 17 in Kuching.

Matthew advised consumers to report indiscriminate price hikes and other offences to the ministry.

He said it was common for offences to go viral on social media without being reported.

“We urge consumers to cooperate by lodging a report first," he said.

Reports or complaints can be made via WhatsApp to 019-848 8000.
