MACC: DPP to decide soon on prosecution in e-waste probe involving top DOE officers

PUTRAJAYA: The Deputy Public Prosecutor is expected to decide soon on whether to prosecute any high-ranking Department of Environment (DOE) officers in connection with the e-waste management, says the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).

Chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said the investigation paper involving the DOE director-general, deputy director-general and a senior officer has been submitted to the Deputy Public Prosecutor.

"We have proposed that they be charged, but the decision is up to the DPP. We will know the decision within a week," he told reporters at the MACC headquarters on Wednesday (March 4).

It was reported that graft busters had submitted the investigation papers on the e-waste corruption probe involving high-ranking DOE officials last month.

On Jan 29, the DOE director-general, deputy director-general and an assistant officer were detained. They were remanded for seven days until Feb 6.

Investigations are focusing on alleged abuse of power and corruption linked to the management of e-waste, believed to have taken place over the past few years.

Several bank accounts with more than RM10mil in funds have also been frozen by graft busters.
