ALOR SETAR: The Kedah branch of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has remanded two enforcement officers on suspicion of soliciting and accepting bribes, amounting to RM39,000, earlier this year.
According to MACC sources, the bribes were allegedly given in exchange for securing approval for foreign worker permits, for a company operating in the state.
The two male suspects, in their 30s and 50s, were arrested, along with another suspect believed to be a middleman, at about 11.59pm Tuesday (March 3) night, when they turned up to give statements at the state MACC office, here.
"Last night, the state MACC detained two enforcement officers, along with an individual believed to be a middleman, in connection with this case. However, the male suspect (the middleman) was released on MACC bail, Wednesday (March 4).
"Preliminary investigations found that the two suspects allegedly conspired to commit the offence between January and February, by soliciting bribes from the company's agent through the middleman," the sources said.
The sources added that both suspects are believed to have received an initial payment, of approximately RM4,000, via bank transfers into their respective accounts, while the remaining RM35,000 has yet to be obtained.
Meanwhile, Kedah MACC director Datuk Nazli Rasyid Sulong, when contacted, confirmed that the suspects have been remanded for six days until March 9, adding that the case is being investigated under Section 16(a)(A) of the MACC Act 2009.
He said comprehensive investigations will continue to determine whether other individuals were involved in the matter. - Bernama
