AGC to charge uni student in Quran incident on March 3

PUTRAJAYA: The Attorney General’s Chambers (AGC) will prosecute a man accused of stepping on a copy of the Quran in an incident in Kuantan, Pahang, which went viral on social media.

In a statement Monday (March 2), the AGC said it had examined the investigation papers submitted by the police regarding the case involving the individual who was named as S. Vikenswaran.

Following a comprehensive review, the AGC found sufficient evidence to charge the suspect.

The man will be charged under Section 295 of the Penal Code (Act 574) for defiling a sacred object by stepping on it, knowing the act insulted Islam.

In addition, he will also be charged under Section 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for making and initiating the transmission of offensive content via social media, intending to hurt others' feelings.

Both charges will be brought before a court of competent jurisdiction on March 3, 2026.

Under Section 295 of the Penal Code, the offence carries a jail term of up to two years, a fine, or both upon conviction.

Meanwhile, Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act provides for a fine of up to RM500,000, imprisonment of up to two years, or both.

The AGC reaffirmed its commitment to upholding justice in accordance with the law.
