Remand extended for suspect over alleged Quran photo incident


KUALA LUMPUR: The remand of a local man detained to assist in investigations into the circulation of a photo allegedly showing the Quran being stepped on has been extended.

Pahang police chief Comm Datuk Seri Yahaya Othman said the suspect was initially remanded from last Wednesday (Feb 25) to Saturday.

“The remand order has been extended until March 3 to enable police to complete their investigations.

“The case is being investigated under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act 1948, Section 298 of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998,” he said in a statement on Sunday (March 1).

He added that 62 police reports have been lodged nationwide over the issue, and statements have been recorded from 43 witnesses.

“The investigation paper is expected to be referred to the Attorney-General’s Chambers on March 2 for further instructions in accordance with Article 145 of the Federal Constitution.

“We advise the public not to speculate or issue statements that could aggravate the situation and affect public order and religious sensitivities.

“The investigations are being conducted in a transparent, professional and fair manner. Firm action will be taken against any party attempting to disrupt harmony and national security,” he added.
