Eight women injured in early morning homestay fire

GEORGE TOWN: A 31-year-old woman broke her right leg while seven others suffered minor injuries and breathing difficulties in a fire at a three-storey homestay in Pearl Residence, Solok Sungai Emas, Batu Ferringhi near here, early on Sunday (March 1).

Penang Fire and Rescue Department, assistant director (Operations) John Sagun Francis, said the department received an emergency call at 4.46am and dispatched a team from the Bagan Jermal Fire and Rescue Station to the scene.

"All eight women, who were renting the premises, managed to escape before firefighters arrived. The fire involved the ground-floor living room, measuring about 140 square metres.

"The blaze was brought under control at 5.20 am and fully extinguished 15 minutes later. The operation ended at 6.26 am," he said in a statement Sunday.

The seven other women, aged 31 to 32, are believed to have suffered smoke inhalation while escaping.

All victims received initial treatment at the scene before being taken to Penang General Hospital for further examination. – Bernama
