KUALA TERENGGANU: Student dormitories carved out of small rooms inside an office premises were among the fire safety violations uncovered during an integrated operation here.

Terengganu Fire and Rescue Department director Nor Mahathir Muhammad said the premises, along with three other locations, were originally approved for use as offices but had since been repurposed as dormitories for workers and students.

Located on the second-floor, it has nine small rooms that had been separately built, he said.

Nor Mahathir said a notice would be issued to the owner or tenant of the premises to rectify the fire hazards identified.

“If they fail to comply within the stipulated period, we will conduct a second inspection,” he told the media during the operation yesterday, Bernama reported.

The raid, codenamed Ops Sepadu Premis Sarang Burung, was focusing on shop and office premises that had been illegally modified, including checking for non-compliance with building regulations and fire safety.

It was carried out at four locations – Jalan Masjid Abidin, Jalan Engku Pengiran Anom 2, Jalan Engku Sar and Jalan Sultan Zainal Abidin.
