Immigration Dept detains 10 undocumented workers in Segamat raids

SEGAMAT: Ten undocumented immigrant workers were detained in three operations codenamed Ops Selera, Ops Kutip and Ops Jaja here.

Johor Immigration Department director Datuk Mohd Rusdi Mohd Darus said the operations were held concurrently on Wednesday (Feb 25) starting from 9am.

He said the operations involved officers from the Segamat Immigration Enforcement Division where eight premises were inspected.

Mohd Rusdi said the premises, namely furniture shops, food outlets and Ramadan bazaars, were targeted for employing and harbouring illegal foreign workers.

"We want to address the presence of illegal immigrant workers in the Segamat district for violating the Immigration Act and Regulations," Mohd Rusdi said in a statement.

He said the 10 illegal migrant workers arrested, aged between 17 and 53, included one male from India, two Bangladeshi men, a Pakistani male, an Indonesian man, a Cambodian male and four Indonesian women.

Mohd Rusdi said the workers committed offences under Regulation 39(b) of the Immigration Regulations 1963, Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 and Section 15(1)(c) of the same Act.

"They are now being placed at the Setia Tropika Immigration Depot in Johor Baru for further action," said Mohd Rusdi.

He added that two summonses were issued to witnesses during the operations to assist with investigation.
