Arrest made less than 24 hours after Bukit Kayu Hitam shooting, says Saifuddin

KUALA LUMPUR: An arrest has been made in connection with the incident in which a Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) commander was shot at in Bukit Kayu Hitam, says Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.

The Home Minister said the interrogation process is ongoing.

“The safety of our borders is our priority. We made an arrest in less than 24 hours.

“Border safety is our priority. We will not bow down to any threats,” he said during Minister’s Question Time in the Dewan Rakyat on Thursday (Feb 26).

Saifuddin Nasution said AKPS personnel regularly confront various cross-border crimes, including weapons, drugs and human trafficking, as well as illegal immigrants and organised crime syndicates.

“AKPS’ role is to facilitate the seamless movement of people and goods without compromising security.

“What happened is regrettable, but we are thankful that the commander was unharmed as the shots only struck his vehicle,” he said.

AKPS Bukit Kayu Hitam commander Senior Asst Comm Mohd Nasaruddin Mohd Nasir was shot at in a pre-dawn incident on Wednesday (Feb 25) near the border with Thailand.

Kedah police chief Comm Datuk Adzli Abu Shah said the commander escaped unharmed in the attack, which occurred at 5.40am, about 1km from the border.

He said SAC Nasaruddin was on his way to perform Subuh prayers at Masjid Al Muhajirin when two men dressed in black and wearing full-face helmets approached his car on a motorcycle.
