A day in jail for single mum who stole skincare products in Melaka


MELAKA: A 31-year-old single mother was sentenced to a day in jail and fined RM900 by the Magistrate’s Court in Ayer Keroh here for stealing various skincare products.

Magistrate Uthman Abd Ghani meted out the sentence after the accused, Joyleen Low Mei Ling, pleaded guilty when the charge was read on Wednesday (Feb 25).

According to the charge, the woman was accused of stealing various skincare products from a health and beauty retailer's outlet in Batu Berendam here.

The items, which were kept inside the premises as stored property, were said to belong to another woman.

The offence was committed at the Watsons outlet in Batu Berendam here at about 5.30pm on Feb 4.

For a second or subsequent offence, the punishment may include whipping.

Earlier, Deputy Public Prosecutor Hanis Aliah Ahmad Kamarulnajuib urged the court to impose an appropriate sentence.

Lawyer Goh Chin Han, representing Low, appealed for a minimum sentence, citing that his client was a single mother to four children aged between four and eight.
