Driver ignores orders, crashes through border checkpoint

ISKANDAR PUTERI: A driver sparked chaos at the Sultan Abu Bakar Customs, Immigration and Quarantine Complex when he rammed through a checkpoint barrier and sped off after allegedly disobeying instructions from auxiliary police.

The drama, captured in a 34-second video that has since gone viral, unfolded at one of the country’s busiest border crossings – the Malaysia-Singapore Second Link.

Iskandar Puteri OCPD Asst Comm M. Kumarasan said an auxiliary policeman lodged a report following the incident, which occurred at 2.40pm on Sunday.

He said a Malaysian-registered car had entered the heavy vehicle exit lane at the complex.

When an auxiliary policeman directed the driver to make a U-turn and proceed to the car lane, the driver allegedly accelerated, crashed through the barrier and four traffic cones before speeding into Singapore.

“We are tracking down the driver,” he said in a statement yesterday.

ACP Kumarasan said the case is being investigated under Section 427 of the Penal Code for mischief, which carries a jail term of not less than one year and not more than five years, a fine or both upon conviction.

The case is also being investigated under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless and dangerous driving.

If convicted, the offender may face up to five years’ jail, a fine of RM5,000 to RM15,000 and disqualification from holding a driving licence.

Those with information can contact the Iskandar Puteri police at 07-511 4486 or 07-511 3622, or any nearby police station.
