KUALA LUMPUR: The strong display of mutual respect among Malaysia’s multifaith communities during Ramadan reflects the nation’s enduring spirit of harmony, says Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

He noted that community leaders from various religious backgrounds, including Buddhist, Christian and Hindu faiths, had come together in a show of goodwill during the Muslim holy month

“This reflects a commendable spirit. Although Ramadan is observed by Muslims, people of other faiths have shown respect through their own practices.”

He cited the recent Chinese New Year celebrations as a clear example, noting that Chinese business associations were willing to bring forward their festivities out of consideration for Muslims observing their fast.

“I express my appreciation. The Chinese business community was willing to bring forward the Chinese New Year celebrations purely out of respect for Muslims observing Ramadan,” the Prime Minister said during the launch of the “Rakan Masjid x Rakan Muda Ramadan” programme and breaking of fast event at Masjid Wilayah Persekutuan here last night.

On Feb 11, the Associated Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia held its Lunar New Year reception, which Anwar attended.

He said that as the Prime Minister, he would still attend such celebrations to honour the culture and religion of the non-Muslim communities, even if he could not partake in the meals during Ramadan.

“But this is the kind of positive tolerance we want to see. How many countries in the world would anyone move the Chinese New Year celebrations forward by four or five days to respect Muslims observing Ramadan?”

Anwar stressed that while religious beliefs differ between communities, mutual respect and upholding human dignity are essential to maintaining national harmony.

“If others respect us, what is wrong with us showing respect in return?” he added.

He cautioned against attempts by some quarters to misuse religious identities to sow division, saying that Malaysia, where Islam is the religion of the Federation, continues to protect the rights of people of all races and religions.

Anwar also called on the younger generation, particularly Muslim youths active in mosques, to carry positive messages and help safeguard the nation’s unity.

“We must build a healthy society while strengthening our faith and increasing knowledge and wisdom,” he said.
