MPs, reps to convene to tackle Hindu temple and estate housing issues, says Kula

PETALING JAYA: Ipoh Barat MP M. Kulasegaran will convene an engagement session in Parliament later this week with Indian Members of Parliament and state assemblypersons to discuss broader issues affecting the Hindu community.

The Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform) said the discussion would cover matters concerning Hindu temples as well as housing and accommodation for estate workers.

This follows a constructive meeting with the National Hindu Temples Steering Committee (NHTSC) in Parliament on Monday (Feb 23), where challenges facing Hindu temples nationwide, particularly land-related issues, were raised.

“In recent months, there have been several sensitive issues relating to land matters involving Hindu temples. I listened carefully to the views presented, including concerns raised at the grassroots level,” he said in a statement.

Kulasegaran said the NHTSC had also proposed pathways towards regularisation under a four-colour framework, as well as a moratorium on enforcement action by local councils while the matters are being reviewed and resolved.

He added that all views gathered, together with proposed action plans, would be conveyed to the government for further consideration and decision.
