History the basis of unity

KUALA LUMPUR: Feb 20, 1956, according to National Unity Minister Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang (pic), is more than just a date in the nation’s history.

“It marks the rise of a nation, uniting the hopes of its people and beginning the journey to true independence.”

Reflecting on that historic day 70 years ago, Aaron said it was when the late first prime minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj, announced the Federation of Malaya’s independence after returning from the Merdeka mission in London.

He said the moment demonstrated that independence was achieved through wise negotiations, tolerance, sacrifice and multiethnic unity, Bernama reported.

Aaron said the government’s move to strengthen history education through the National Education Blueprint was timely.

The move, he said, aims to help young people better understand the true meaning of independence and their civic responsibilities.

He said the initiative not only deepens knowledge but also promotes civic awareness and a sense of patriotism.

“With a strong grasp of history, today’s generation will be more focused, principled and grounded in national identity as they tackle current challenges and shape the nation’s future.”

Aaron said the National Unity Ministry established the National Historians Council last year to pool expertise, preserve accurate historical narratives, and keep the nation’s history alive.

His ministry, through the National Archives and the Department of Museums, would continue to preserve, document and promote history to safeguard the nation’s heritage for future generations, he said.

These initiatives are ongoing efforts to foster unity grounded in historical awareness and national values, he said.

“History is the foundation of unity, and unity is the safeguard of the nation’s future.

“Let us reflect on our history, honour the sacrifices of our leaders and renew our commitment to building a united, harmonious, and resilient Malaysia for current and future generations.”
