Former Chief Justice Tun Abdul Hamid passes away


SHAH ALAM: Former chief justice Tun Abdul Hamid Mohamad died at the age of 84 at the Hospital Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (HUKM) on Thursday (Feb 19).

His family confirmed his passing, and the funeral is expected to take place after the Asar prayer, reported Sinar Harian.

Tun Abdul Hamid was known for his significant contributions to the country’s judicial system and for his role in strengthening the integrity and governance of the Malaysian judiciary throughout his career.

He was born on 18 April 1942 in Kampung Permatang Tinggi Bakar Bata, Kepala Batas, Penang.

He began his career in the judicial service as a magistrate in Kangar, Perlis, and Tapah, Perak, and later held various key positions,, including Assistant Director of the Legal Aid Bureau, Deputy Registrar of the High Court and Chief Prosecution Officer at the Attorney General’s Chambers.

Abdul Hamid was appointed as a Judicial Commissioner on 1 May 1990, a High Court Judge in 1992, a Court of Appeal Judge on 1 September 2000, and a Federal Court Judge on 1 August 2003.

He was later appointed chief justice at the age of 65.
