PETALING JAYA: The removal of a stall set up by the Multiracial Reverted Muslims (MRM) at Jalan Bukit Bintang was done in accordance with the law, says Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL).
DBKL said the stall in front of the Yayasan Selangor building was taken down on Tuesday (Feb 17) as it was placed on the pedestrian walkway, which is a violation as public areas must remain unobstructed to ensure safety.
“DBKL enforcement officers had gone to the location to get an explanation from the parties involved.
“However, after waiting for more than 30 minutes, no representatives from the relevant party came forward to provide an explanation to DBKL officers,” it said in a statement on Wednesday (Feb 18).
The local council said its enforcement officers then dismantle the tents and remove the related materials for storage purposes in accordance with the provisions of the law and existing by-laws.
“Throughout the enforcement operation, the responsible party was still not present to provide any explanation.
“DBKL wishes to emphasise that all enforcement actions are carried out professionally, prudently and in accordance with the law," it said, adding that the enforcement was important to ensure public safety.
The statement also noted that DBKL’s management will hold a meeting with MRM to discuss a long-term solution and to ensure that similar situations do not recur in the future.
“DBKL has never obstructed dakwah activities in public spaces.
“However, all activities must be carried out in accordance with the processes and procedures set by the local authorities,” it added.
Earlier, PAS Youth had criticised DBKL’s action over a ‘Street Dakwah’ programme organised by MRM, saying the stall was shut down and religious materials seized.
