Perikatan to decide new chairman at Extraordinary Supreme Council Meeting on Feb 22

KOTA BHARU: The position of Perikatan Nasional chairman will be determined at the coalition's Extraordinary Supreme Council Meeting scheduled for this Sunday (Feb 22).

Perikatan Deputy Secretary-General Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan said the special meeting is scheduled for 3pm at PAS headquarters in Kuala Lumpur, according to Sinar Harian.

He said the meeting is being held specifically to discuss two main agenda items: approving the resignation of Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin as Perikatan chairman and appointing a new chairman to lead the coalition.

"This is an extraordinary meeting of the Perikatan Supreme Council," he said.

"The agenda stated in the summons letter consists of only two items, namely accepting Tan Sri Muhyiddin's resignation as Perikatan chairman and appointing a new Perikatan chairman," he said.

He said this after attending a Chinese New Year celebration at the residence of the president of the Federation of Chinese Associations, Datuk Oie Poh Choon, here on Tuesday (Feb 17).

Elaborating further, he said that under the Perikatan constitution, when the chairmanship is vacant, the meeting must appoint one of the deputy chairmen to preside.

He said PN currently has three deputy chairmen, and the meeting chairperson will be selected in accordance with the coalition's constitution.

Meanwhile, he explained that an extraordinary meeting can be convened when at least half of the member parties agree.

"In Perikatan, there are four member parties. When at least two parties agree, the meeting must be held," he said.

"So far, agreement has been reached to convene the extraordinary meeting," he said.

He also said that before the Perikatan meeting, PAS Central would hold its own meeting at 11am the same day, followed by the Extraordinary Meeting of the Perikatan Supreme Council in the afternoon.

Asked whether the issue of the Opposition Leader would also be discussed, he said the matter was not on the official agenda for the meeting.

"As far as the summons letters issued are concerned, there are only those two agenda items," he said.

"The issue of the Leader of the Opposition is a separate matter and may be discussed in another meeting," he said.
