Brake failure believed to be cause of fatal cement mixer-4WD crash in Sibu, say cops

SIBU: Brake malfunction is believed to have caused the fatal crash involving a cement mixer and a four-wheel drive (4WD) vehicle that claimed the life of a 60-year-old man recently.

The Feb 10 accident on Jalan Deshon here claimed the life of Ting Teck Kee who was the driver of the 4WD.

Sibu OCPD Asst Comm Zulkifli Suhaili said initial investigations indicated that the accident occurred due to brake failure on the cement mixer, which was reportedly being driven in an erratic manner prior to the collision.

“We are conducting investigations under Section 41 of the Road Transport Act 1987. From our initial findings, the accident is believed to have occurred due to brake failure on the cement mixer,” he told reporters after a monthly parade on Thursday (February 12).

He stressed that investigations are still ongoing to determine the exact cause of the incident, including a detailed inspection of the vehicle’s mechanical condition.

“At this stage, brake malfunction is our initial finding. However, the investigation is still ongoing and we are looking into all relevant aspects,” he added.

In a separate case, ACP Zulkifli said police are also carrying out thorough investigations into the drowning of three children in a sewerage pond in Sibu Jaya on Feb 4.

“We are investigating the case from various angles. A Sudden Death Report (SDR) has been opened and we are conducting detailed investigations to ensure that all aspects are examined,” he said.

He explained that the SDR process enables police to assess the circumstances comprehensively before determining whether further action or reclassification of the case is required.

Police have urged the public to refrain from speculation and allow investigations to proceed.

The three children were Macx Devdynne Sharie Merdek,12, Macx Welwait Merdeka,9 and Daniella Arissa Tayas Maringgai 10.
